The World Health Organization (WHO) has defined Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) as the non-medical factors that influence health outcomes. They are the conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age, and the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life.
These forces and systems include economic policies and systems, development agendas, social norms, social policies, racism, climate change, and political systems. (CDC-adapted definition from WHO 2022) Healthy People 2030 includes SDOH among its leading health indicators. One of Healthy People 2030’s five overarching goals is specifically related to SDOH: Create social, physical, and economic environments that promote attaining the full potential for health and well-being for all.
At NJCDC we believe a strong community is a healthy community and a healthy community is a strong community. We believe building a safe, stable, and proud community is the primary key to achieving our goal. That is why we are so passionate about providing forums and opportunities for the community to be heard.
Social determinants of health (SDOH) have a major impact on people’s health, well-being, and quality of life. Examples of SDOH include:
Health disparities are preventable differences in the burden of disease, injury, violence, or opportunities to achieve optimal health that are experienced by socially disadvantaged populations.1
Populations can be defined by factors such as race or ethnicity, gender, education or income, disability, geographic location (e.g., rural or urban), or sexual orientation.
Health disparities are inequitable and are directly related to the historical and current unequal distribution of social, political, economic, and environmental resources. (www.CDC.gov)
Our partnerships with New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), St. Bernards Regional Medical Center, and University of Arkansas Medical Science (UAMS) were formed with our community in mind. Having strong Medical Health Literacy is second only to access to quality health care. Our partners will conducts health screening, health fairs, medical appointments and seminars and workshops.
